Bridge Work Scheduled To Start Next Week Entering Pike from I-295

Congestion and significant delays expected weekday afternoons from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.

PORTLAND, Maine – A bridge improvement project beginning Tuesday, September 3, is expected to impact drivers who use the Turnpike on-ramp at the southern end of I-295.

The bridge, located just after the toll plaza, will be narrowed to one lane for approximately one month as crews rehabilitate the 40-year old bridge which carries traffic over Payne Road in Scarborough.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays, especially weekday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m. The MTA reminds motorists that the Maine Turnpike is also accessible by taking Exit 1 (Maine Mall Road) southbound on I-295. Drivers can then enter the Pike southbound from the Maine Mall Approach Road leading to Exit 45.

The MTA strives to keep drivers informed about planned Turnpike lane closures and travel alerts, but the possibility exists that unscheduled work may occur with short notice. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
