FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 27, 2026 |
PORTLAND, Maine — If you’re relocating to Maine, adding “Open a Maine E‑ZPass account” to your moving checklist is just as important as updating your mailing address or transferring your vehicle registration. Each summer along the Turnpike, thousands of drivers unknowingly pay more in tolls when they relocate to Maine and are getting settled here.
What every new Mainer should know—the state where your E-ZPass account is issued—determines the discount you receive as that state's customer.
Although E-ZPass works across dozens of states, only a Maine E-ZPass account provides Maine discounts.
If you are newly moving to Maine, it is important to know that Maine is not a pay-by-plate state on the Turnpike AND out-of-state E-ZPass accounts pay cash toll rates. For many Maine-bound drivers, this distinction matters more than they realize.
Maine Turnpike Authority offers two toll prices:
• Cash rate
• Maine E-ZPass rate
For anyone settling here—especially those who regularly use the Turnpike—opening a Maine E‑ZPass account can make a big difference in everyday costs.
Maine Transponder Options
• Sticker tag, $5 — One time, tamper evident windshield sticker (passive UHF RFID). Can be removed but not reused: removal deactivates the tag. Best for a single vehicle; usable anywhere E ZPass is accepted.
• Branded sticker tag, $20 — Available soon. Offers the same functionality as the standard sticker tag, but with themed designs. Current participating teams include Hearts of Pine, the Boston Red Sox, and the Portland Sea Dogs. Best for a single vehicle; usable anywhere E ZPass is accepted. Public sales anticipated to begin on August 17, 2026.
• Interior transponder, $15 — A portable, hard‑cased device designed to move easily between vehicles. It mounts to the windshield using Velcro tabs that attach to both the windshield and the transponder, allowing it to be remove when switching cars or to place it in a shield bag.
A Maine E-ZPass helps drivers:
• Pay less than the cash rate.
• Receive Maine's discounted toll rates.
• Earn monthly volume discounts of 20% for 30–39 trips and 40% for 40 or more trips.
• Automatic replenish with a credit or debit card for accounts in good standing.
• Add multiple vehicles or family members to one account to reach volume discount thresholds more quickly.
Bottom Line
