The Maine Turnpike is Maine's safest highway—and that's no accident. From 24/7 snowplowing to dedicated State Police patrols, every mile is engineered for safety and reliability. Behind the scenes, advanced traffic cameras, a communications center, and safety patrols keep drivers safe.
The Turnpike powers Maine's economy. Millions of visitors travel the Turnpike each year, and 55% of all interstate truck freight enters through Kittery via the Turnpike. That means essential goods, tourism, and commerce flow through Maine- boosting local communities without added tax burden.
Unlike other roads funded by gas taxes, the Turnpike uses ZERO tax dollars. Nearly 65% of toll revenue comes from out-of-state drivers and freight carriers, meaning visitors pay the bill while Mainers save. Maine E-ZPass rates rank among the lowest 1/4th in the country—keeping costs down for Maine residents.

The Maine Turnpike is patrolled end-to-end by Maine State Police's Troop G, whose troopers use advanced radar, laser speed-monitoring, and aerial support to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently from Kittery to Augusta.

Maine Turnpike Authority’s dedicated Safety Patrol ensures stranded motorists get help, debris is removed, and incidents are cleared, all funded by toll revenue, not tax dollars.
Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, the TMCC handles The center handles thousands of calls annually—including crashes, disabled vehicles, medical emergencies, debris hazards, and more. Using variable message signs, highway cameras, and advanced data systems, the TMCC keeps travelers informed of changing road conditions and helps make their journey safe and smooth.
Because every toll you pay is a user fee, those funds directly support these safety partners and keep Maine’s busiest highway safe for commuters, visitors, and professional truckers alike.
