PORTLAND, Maine — Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) is urging drivers to remain vigilant and patient as traffic volumes are expected to increase on the Turnpike during the Thanksgiving holiday week.
MTA is predicting about a 2% increase in vehicle transactions on the Turnpike over the holiday period, putting traffic levels higher than in 2019, which was a record-setting year.
“The Thanksgiving holiday is always a busy one on Maine’s Turnpike, though it is not quite as busy as a peak summer weekend. However, unlike summer, inclement weather is much more likely to be a factor in late November,” said MTA Director of Communications Rebecca Grover.
Traffic is expected to be heaviest on Wednesday as people head out to begin the long weekend. For those hoping to beat the crowds, traveling early Wednesday morning is recommended. Of the entire holiday period, Thanksgiving Day itself is traditionally the least busy travel day.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are expected to have similar traffic volumes, with Sunday projected to be the second-busiest day of the week after Wednesday. Across these days, midday is typically the busiest travel window.
While snow is not currently in the forecast, MTA Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Stevens reminded drivers that winter conditions can arrive quickly: “On Maine’s Turnpike, ‘ice and snow, take it slow’ is more than just a slogan. We’re entering the season when everyone must make safe, and potentially life-saving, decisions behind the wheel in bad weather.”
MTA urges travelers to drive with care, courtesy, and consideration for Turnpike crews and emergency personnel who may be working on the road.
