MTA Joins Partners to Celebrate New Greater Porltand Metro Route 25

Five-year MTA investment helps bring expanded transit options to communities along the Route 25 corridor.

Maine Turnpike Authority joined community partners and regional leaders today to celebrate the launch of Greater Portland Metro’s new Route 25. Today’s ribbon cutting, held in front of the Scarborough Town Hall, included a press conference with remarks from the leaders who worked together to expand the new transportation option.

Route 25 connnects Portland, South Portland, and Scarborough and will include stops at the Veterans Affairs Clinic on Commercial Street, the MaineHealth campus in Scarborough, and Exit 42 Park and Ride lot.

At today’s event, MTA Executive Director Andre Briere highlighted why this partnership matters for Maine. “The Maine Turnpike was built to serve Maine—and today, that means supporting more than just cars and trucks,” Briere said. “This new transit service gives commuters alternatives, and when more people use public transportation, it eases pressure on the road network as a whole. That improves efficiency on the Turnpike and makes local roads safer. Supporting Metro’s work to better connect communities aligns squarely with our mission to make travel in Maine safer and more sustainable.”

The partnership includes MaineDOT, the Town of Scarborough, and Greater Portland Metro. Over the next five years, the Maine Turnpike Authority will contribute $3.5 million to support the service to help expand transportation choices for riders and provide a reliable alternative to single occupant vehicle travel which helps reduces congestion, and encourages environmental responsibility.

Also in attendance at the press conference was GO MAINE, another MTA and MaineDOT collaboration focused on promoting carpooling and commuting solutions that ease demand on the road network.

Today’s celebration reflected the shared commitment of local municipalities, transit partners, and Maine Turnpike Authority to support a transportation system that serves all Maine people.
