The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA), Maine’s Gold Star Memorial Highway, is seeking a Director of Highway & Equipment Maintenance to lead roadway and fleet maintenance operations statewide. Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, this position is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of 650 lane miles of roadway, 185 bridges, rights-of-way, and more than 400 pieces of equipment.
The Director leads the Highway and Equipment Maintenance Departments and provides overall direction for daily operations, long-term planning, budgeting, staffing, and performance management. This role oversees winter maintenance and snow and ice control operations, ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards, manages fleet acquisition and preventive maintenance programs, and coordinates closely with Engineering and other departments on capital and maintenance projects. The Director also works with contractors and responds to operational issues and public concerns to ensure safe and efficient travel for our customers.
Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field, along with at least ten years of experience in public works, highway or bridge maintenance, or a related area. A minimum of five years of supervisory experience is required. Experience managing snow and ice control operations on a public roadway system is strongly preferred. Professional Engineer licensure in the State of Maine is preferred. Experience managing budgets and working in a union environment is also important. This position requires strong leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to respond during winter storms and major incidents. Regular travel to MTA facilities statewide is required. The position is classified at a Range 24, $115,814 to $190,798, commensurate with experience, and a comprehensive benefits package including health and dental insurance, retirement plan, health reimbursement account; paid vacation and sick leave, and 13 paid holidays.
