Communications Center Specialist

The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA), Maine’s Gold Star Memorial Highway, is seeking a Communications Center Specialist to join the Traffic Management Center team. This position plays an important role in supporting safe and efficient travel on the Maine Turnpike by providing emergency and non-emergency communications services for law enforcement, emergency responders, MTA employees, and the traveling public.


The Communications Center Specialist operates radio, telecommunications, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, and computer-aided dispatch systems to monitor and respond to incidents throughout the Turnpike system. This position dispatches personnel and equipment for crashes, roadway hazards, weather events, and other incidents while ensuring accurate documentation and timely communication with emergency services and MTA personnel. The Specialist also operates electronic message boards, highway advisory radio systems, and web-based traffic advisory services.


Qualified candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, experience working with computer systems, and strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience working in a public safety dispatch center, traffic management center, or with a computer-aided dispatch system is required. Candidates must be able to effectively communicate with emergency responders, MTA personnel, and the public; manage multiple priorities; maintain confidentiality; and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Successful completion of criminal history and background investigation is required.

This position requires availability for all shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations, as the Traffic Management Center operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
