When driving through cash toll plazas
obey the speed limit!
It's safer for you...
The Maine Turnpike Authority has good reason for setting the 10 mile per hour toll plaza speed limit through the toll plazas. On the average day, the MTA processes over 360,000 transactions.
With that many cars in a limited space, it is important to be alert. Other vehicles can stop suddenly or change lanes when you least expect it. By slowing to 10 miles per hour, you give yourself time to react.
It's safer for us...
For toll collectors to do their job, they stand within an arm's length of live traffic. There are times when they need to leave the booths and walk across the lanes. If you're driving too fast, you won't have enough time to stop, and the collector might not have enough time to get out of your way.
...And it's the law.
The Turnpike Authority worked closely with the Maine State Police to develop a safe speed limit for our toll plazas. The Troopers are serious about enforcing it and violators face minimum fines of $109, not to mention points against their licenses.
*If you have an E-ZPass and you are going through the ORT, highway speed lanes, please obey the posted speed limit at each plaza. If you are traveling through the cash lanes with your E-ZPass, you must obey the 10 mph speed limit.
IF YOU USE AN E-ZPASS LANE BY BY MISTAKE:
DO NOT STOP
DO NOT BACK UP
DO NOT PULL OVER
DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE
KEEP GOING
