Weekend long closure of Cummings Road Bridge to begin Saturday morning
Construction of new bridge nearing completion
SCARBOROUGH, Maine- Beginning Saturday morning, September 12, 2020, the Cummings Road Bridge in Scarborough will be closed to traffic through the weekend. The bridge will close starting at 6:00 AM on Saturday and will reopen by 6:00 AM on Monday, September 14, 2020.
During the closure a detour around the bridge will be signed via Running Hill Road. This closure is necessary to facilitate a concrete pour on the bridge that is its third and final stage of construction. Keeping the bridge closed will enable the contractor, CPM Constructors of Freeport, to join the sections of concrete decks poured in phase I and phase II while preventing the closure pour from developing cracks due to adjacent bridge traffic.
“This weekend closure is significant because it means we are nearing substantial completion of the bridge work, which is exciting,” said Erin Courtney, MTA public outreach manager, “We thank the public for their patience during this construction and look forward to when motorists can drive over the new, completed bridge.”
This $14 million project was awarded to CPM in the fall of 2018. It is scheduled to be substantially complete by mid-November. When opened, the new Cummings Road Bridge will more than double the width of the original bridge, providing four 11-foot lanes and two five-foot shoulders.
Final completion of the project is scheduled for the spring of 2021 when the final surface paving, guardrail and line striping is to be completed.
This project was the first to start out of four bridges getting an overhaul in order to accommodate the Portland Area Widening that is currently underway.
