Emergency southbound lane closures at Mile 33 in Saco to occur on mainline Sunday (2/5)
Double lane closures on Saco River Bridge necessary for crews to place protective barriers
SACO, Maine – Beginning at approximately 6:00 AM on Sunday, February 5, 2023, the Turnpike mainline will be reduced to one lane southbound in Saco at Mile 33 to allow maintenance crews to install concrete barrier in front of damaged rail on the Saco River Bridge. The bridge was damaged during the crash that occurred on Friday afternoon. The double lane closure will allow our crews room to safely complete the work as they haul over 550 feet of concrete barriers to serve as temporary protection in front of the bridge rail. Due to the extent of the work, the double lane closure is anticipated to last for most of the day Sunday.
Based on typical Turnpike traffic on Sundays in February, southbound backups are expected to occur. Motorists should anticipate delays after 10:00 AM. Message boards will be in place to inform approaching travelers and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) broadcasts on 1610 AM will also be used to inform drivers. Maine Turnpike Authority appreciates motorists’ patience during this emergency work.
