Soaring construction costs and declining toll revenues—resulting from the first reduction in Maine Turnpike traffic volumes in decades—made it necessary for the Maine Turnpike to move up the planned 2010 toll increase by a year. As a result, new toll rates went into effect on February 1, 2009.
The toll adjustment was necessary to continue an essential program of highway and bridge maintenance, to meet the Maine Turnpike Authority’s legal obligation to maintain a safe and efficient highway, and to fulfill the Authority’s commitment to serve the best interests of the people of Maine.
The Maine Turnpike does not receive any state, federal or local tax dollars. It is funded entirely by tolls and rental revenues from venders at Turnpike service plazas.
Following the recommendations of the Citizens Advisory Committee on Toll Equity, the Board of Directors approved a new toll structure that minimizes the impact on Maine people who use the Turnpike regularly and are E-ZPass customers. The increased toll rates for Maine E-ZPass users are significantly lower than the increased toll rates for cash paying customers. Cash paying customers tend to be less frequent users of the Turnpike.
