Route 196 / Lisbon Street and
Maine Central RR Overpass Bridge Rehabilitation
Work is being conducted on the bridges that carry the Maine Turnpike over Lisbon Street and Maine Central Railroad located at mile 81.4 of the Maine Turnpike in Lewiston.
T-Buck Construction of Turner, Maine was awarded the $6 million project. Since beginning the work last June, crews have been constructing a cross over to reroute traffic onto one side of the Turnpike bridge. One lane in each direction will be open over one bridge as the contractor accesses the other to conduct the rehabilitation without interacting with moving traffic, which makes the project more safe and less costly. Traffic volumes in this area can be reduced to one-lane in each direction without causing major delays, except perhaps during the high volume summer weekends.
The project work consists of removing, replacing and widening the existing north and southbound bridge decks, replacement of guardrails, concrete parapets, fabrication and erection of steel beams, concrete pier restoration and other work included in the plans and specifications. The contract is scheduled to be completed in July 2011.
Bridge Rehabilitation on Falmouth Spur
Since June, Technical Construction of Turner has been on the site of a major two-bridge rehabilitation project on the Maine Turnpike Falmouth Spur connecting U.S. Route 1 and I-295 with the Turnpike in Falmouth.
Throughout the summer, crews worked to prep the site of the Blackstrap and Maine Central Railroad (MCRR) bridges. The bridges, originally built in 1955, have been showing their age, and substantial repairs were required on the concrete bridge abutments and the bridge decks. During the course of the project each bridge deck will be stripped down to the bare metal bridge beams, the concrete decks replaced and new railings installed. Crews also will add a 10-foot shoulder supported by two new piers to the MCRR bridge, a critical safety feature.
In mid-October, traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction and crossed over to the eastbound lanes. Once the current section of bridge is complete, traffic will be shifted to the westbound lanes so work can proceed on the eastbound side. The $4.4 million project is due to be complete in late 2010.
