Commuter Plan Program Changes

The Maine Turnpike Authority will update its current toll structure starting November 1, 2012. As a result, the Commuter Plan will no longer be available to Turnpike customers after October 31, 2012. Please read the following information carefully.

The new toll structure will convert the Commuter Plan to a new Volume Based Discount Program. The new discount program may not be as deep but will be available to all Maine E-ZPass® customers.

Because changes to the new volume based system may have a significant impact on some participants in the current commuter plan, the Turnpike Board directed staff to develop a plan to phase in the changes.  This plan was adopted at the October 18th Turnpike Board meeting.  The plan will apply as follows:

During the phase in period from November 1, 2012, until June 30, 2013, all class I (non-business automobile) account holders who use the turnpike at least 40 times a month will receive a 50% discount on their entire bill for the month.  Those who use it between 30 and 39 trips a month will receive a 25% discount.  After June 30, 2013, the discount program approved by the Board on August 16, 2012, will go into effect. The MTA Board also unanimously approved a motion directing Turnpike staff and board members to review the financial impact of discount changes two months prior to the expiration of the phase-in period.

Benefits of the Volume Based Discount Program include:

• The MTA will no longer require customers to make advance quarterly toll payments
• Discounts will be calculated by adding trips from all vehicles listed on an account (limit of 4).
• Discounts will be based on Maine E-ZPass® rates
• Discounts will automatically be applied to all eligible Maine E-ZPass® accounts after each month for every trip  taken that month   

The new Volume Based Discount Program will be applied as follows:

Discount Levels from November 1, 2012 to June 30th, 2013


Discount Levels from July 1st, 2013


To estimate your monthly costs, please review the new rate chart for E-ZPass that will be implemented on November 1, 2012. 

Due to the conversion from the Commuter Plan Program to the Volume Based Discount Program, standard E-ZPass® account balances will change more quickly and we urge you to monitor your account regularly to avoid a negative balance.

For our automatic replenishment customers, this means your credit card will be billed more quickly and your amounts may increase. Those who currently make only advance quarterly payments for the Commuter Plan will need to deposit and maintain a standard E-ZPass® account balance prior to travel after October 31, 2012. Pre-paid Commuter Plan customers will have balances automatically refunded. New Maine E-ZPass® rates effective November 1, 2012 are available here.
