Miles the Moose & Farmers' Almanac to Greet Labor Day Travelers

Miles to greet travelers from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

PORTLAND, Maine – The Maine Turnpike Authority has announced that Miles the Moose will again bid a fond farewell to tourists departing Maine on Labor Day at the York Toll Plaza.

In addition, the MTA and Farmers' Almanac have joined to produce a Special 2014 Turnpike Edition which Miles the Moose and Turnpike staff will hand out to passing motorists from approximately 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., weather permitting.

"Farmers' Almanac is proud to call Maine its home and to team up with the Maine Turnpike Authority to provide this useful and unique gift to departing vacationers over the coming holiday weekend. One of our state's slogans is 'The Way Life Should Be,' and the Farmers' Almanac embodies that spirit, offering readers wit, wisdom, weather predictions, and advice on how to live a better, simpler, more satisfying life," said Peter Geiger, Philom., editor of the Lewiston-based publication, which released its 197th edition earlier this week.  Geiger added, “As you plan your next vacation, be sure to check our weather forecast. And remember, Maine has four fantastic seasons to offer.”

“Farmers' Almanac is a fun way for passengers of all ages to enjoy a number of enjoyable and useful articles on topics ranging from simple recipes, outdoor recreation tips and helpful remedies for pet problems,” said Turnpike spokesman Dan Morin. The Special Turnpike Edition also includes 2013 dates for a number of popular Maine fairs and fall festivals.

More than 985,000 toll transactions occurred on the Maine Turnpike Friday through Monday over Labor Day Weekend 2013—more than 240,000 combined northbound and southbound through the York Toll Plaza alone. Over 3,700 vehicles regularly pass southbound through the York Toll Plaza every hour between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. each Labor Day.

Holiday weekend travelers are encouraged to visit MaineTurnpike.com and sign up for up-to-the-minute travel alerts by email or follow the MTA on Facebook or Twitter for timely updates and other Turnpike information. The MTA strongly urges drivers to keep their eyes on the road and only check travel information before leaving or by stopping at one of its 5 service plazas.
