Miles the Maine Turnpike Moose will be at the York Toll Plaza on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2011 beginning at 11:00 a.m. to bid farewell to departing tourists.
Starting a bit earlier at 10:00 a.m., Turnpike toll collectors will begin handing out 15,000 beautifully illustrated refrigerator magnets to motorists departing the Turnpike southbound at the plaza (photo attached).
The pennant-shaped magnets depict the stateÕs natural beauty as well as some quintessential Maine activities such as boating, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Each magnet is attached to a card featuring the full illustration and listing 20 Maine fall and winter events the Turnpike hopes will entice visitors to return and see how ÒcoolÓ things get in the months ahead.
ÒMaine has traditionally drawn repeat visits from people who have been captivated by the stateÕs inherent beauty and recreational opportunities,Ó Maine Turnpike Executive Director Peter Mills said. ÒThe Turnpike it pleased to continue its tradition of providing departing visitors with a small token of appreciation that we hope will prompt many to return to Maine soon.Ó
