Emergency Repairs on Forest Avenue Bridge Begin Wed. (4/9)

Bridge Repairs to Cause Southbound Lane Closures for Two Nights

PORTLAND, Maine – Maine Turnpike motorists are advised to prepare for overnight southbound mainline lane closures on the Forest Avenue Bridge in Portland beginning Wednesday, April 9, due to emergency expansion joint repairs. The evening closures are southbound only and are scheduled for Wednesday, April 9 and Thursday, April 10, 2014. The closures are scheduled to begin each night at 6:00 p.m. and will last through 6:00 a.m.

The repair involves placing a 4-foot wide steel plate over the southbound Forest Avenue Bridge expansion joint. The steel plate is 1.25 inches thick and will be bolted to the bridge deck. The speed limit will be lowered to 50 miles per hour and warning signs will be installed prior to the bridge alerting drivers to the steel plate and “bump” ahead. The Maine Turnpike Authority appreciates motorists’ patience and understanding during this construction.

The emergency repair work will be completed by Wyman & Simpson of Richmond. Additional repairs to the bridge are scheduled to occur this summer. The contract is currently out to bid. The project will be completed in the fall of 2014.
